I LOVE SUMMER!!!

“Lucky you live Hawaii” and it’s basically summer all year long!! Of course, those of us who live here notice the difference in our “seasons”, for instance, slightly cooler ocean in the winter (January and February), and definitely hotter temperatures and more humidity in September, October, and November. But face it, when you compare the seasons here with most places on the mainland, there is a big difference.

Betty:
I just find myself this year being more excited about Summer than usual – maybe because we did a Fall cruise and trip this last year that helped us experience the Fall colors in Boston, Canada, Syracuse, and Charlotte. Maybe because we watched “Frozen” and saw how excited Olaf was about Summer! (Don’t tell him!!!) Maybe because I had knee surgery and can’t go in the water yet!! Which, of course, makes me want to go all the more!

Ed:
When you live in Hawaii and it is mostly like summer weather year-round, it is difficult to find the contrast and get excited like we did when school let out as a child, and we ran out singing “No more pencils no more books no more teacher’s dirty looks.” What surprised me most when reflecting on summer was the ingrained attitude of freedom that all the years of school had conditioned in me.  Summer vacation was the only escape that never had any regrets at the end.  All the other breaks, vacations and holidays had last-minute papers to finish, books to read, tests to study for or projects to do.  Summer was pure freedom from oppression!  To this day I notice the lightheartedness that summer conjures in me.  Don’t get me wrong, I actually liked school for the most part, but I loved summer!

Betty:
When I was young we spent the summer riding bikes and wagons, and rolling down hills in our front yard, and playing whiffle ball, Frozen Tag, Monopoly and Hide & Seek for hours!!! We explored the woods by our house following the creek all the way to the river. Staying out until the streetlights came on. Lying on the grass and watching the clouds and then finding the 1st star to show up and then all of the rest. Growing a garden. Mowing the yard. I also loved playing in the Summer Band at Austin Peay State University with my dad directing.

Ed:
Summer also reminds me of the Joy of playing with freedom.  Pure fun and being 100% present wherever or whatever we were doing!  Yesterday was gone and tomorrow will take care of itself, just be here now! This included both outdoor and indoor games. My outdoor favorites were baseball, kick the can, hide & seek, golf, swimming and boating.  Indoors included Monopoly, Clue and other board games, lots of card games and building model boats and planes. Whatever it was I recall as always filled with laughter, silliness, jokes, pranks, and no bedtime curfew!  Just fall asleep when exhausted and be ready and excited for waking up tomorrow. What are some of your best summertime memories?
